My MUST Have Essential Oils…and how I use them.

PicMonkey Collage

Essential Oils have been used for centuries to help cure illnesses, spiritually ground, and often used for beauty purposes. When I first became interested in using them, I was blown away by all the different brands, and was unsure of where to start. Through trial and error I have finally found oils, blends, and a brand I prefer. I personally like Young Living because they are convenient, they are all natural, and you can ingest them, literally “Seed to Seal.”  Keep in mind though, it is a personal choice!

Peppermint: This is probably my MOST used oil. I use this along with lemon and lavender to help relieve my allergy symptoms. If I am sore from a workout, or am sick and have body aches, I will add two drops to my bath. I also can not get on a plane without it. I usually put a tad bit under my nose, since airplanes tend to have an unpleasant smell to me. Also I am huge on peppermint tea, so if I run out of tea bags or a place does not have peppermint tea I can place a drop in hot water.

Lemon: I use this along with peppermint and lavender to help relieve my allergy symptoms.  I also like to diffuse this oil by itself because it leaves a room feeling fresh and clean.

Lavender: Again, I use this along with peppermint and lemon to help relieve my allergy symptoms.

Tea Tree:  I defuse this a lot in the wintertime to help fight off any viral infections. If I do catch a cold I rub this oil on the bottom of my feet at bedtime each night. It is also used to treat skin issues, and is the best for taking the itch out of a bug bite. I’m not a huge fan of the smell so I only use it when I need it.

White Angelica: I use this oil every time I teach, so basically I use this oil almost everyday.  As a teacher you are subjected to everyone’s emotions in a room. This oil is a blend of essential oils that calm and soothe, promote feelings of strength and protection, and blocks against any negative energy. As teachers we are healers. People come to yoga for many different reasons but they all have one thing in common…they are looking for a release, looking for some comfort and looking at you for some guidance. I have had students who suffer from severe depression, anxiety, going through divorces, death, sickness, etc. I am an emotionally sensitive person, and because I touch each and every one of my students, their energy definitely radiates through me. Sometimes energies can be overbearing and sometimes these energies have nothing to do with my personal feelings. By applying this oil topically, it helps to keep my aura in check, so that I have nothing but positive vibes to exchange with my students to help them through any tough time they may be going through or feeling.

Myrrh: This oil is a pricey, but it’s my favorite to use for meditation.  I also like to put a few drops when I draw a bath. I love to defuse this scent since it reminds me of Christmas, so obviously it makes me smile.

Thieves: This oil is a must for me because it is specifically designed to support the body’s natural defenses supporting a healthy immune system and energizing the body. I also combine Thieves and RC after any traveling to cleanse the lungs to prevent any respiratory sicknesses.

RC: This oil helps energize before a busy day or workout, so I usually will rub some on my chest when I am lacking energy. Again, after any kind of travel, I combine Thieves and RC  to cleanse the lungs to prevent any respiratory sicknesses.

Frankincense:  This oil is a little pricy so I use it sparingly. I like to diffuse this if I have a stressful day, the scent is calming. This scent also reminds me of Christmas, so smiles are present where this scent is smelled! I also use this on my face if I have a blemish, and have used this on my scars – it works wonders! I like to diffuse this while practicing or teaching yoga since it grounds you spirituality. Frankincense acts as an anti-inflammatory in the nasal passages, making breathing easier, so I diffuse this when I have a cough or cold.

XOXO

My new obsession

FullSizeRender-16.jpg

Why is Young Living my new obsession? It is a natural way to keep the mind and body happy and healthy. I have been more aware then ever as to what I put on and in my body. I can’t say I am totally chemically free or vegan or vegetarian but I do my best to make healthy choices. I was recently introduced to the line Young Living by my amazing boss. Not only do they sell essential oils, but they sell vitamins, beauty products, house hold cleaners , etc.

I started with the starter kit and am obsessed. It is the best and cheapest way to be introduced to the oils. Every month I order anything I run out of that I use on a daily basis as well as 2-3 new products. My bucket list of things I want to try are super long so that system helps with my budget best. Below are the three products I ordered this month and HIGHLY recommend. ( I only post reviews on products that have significantly worked )

Wolfberry Eye Cream: I have been using the eye cream for about two weeks now and I must say I am super impressed. It has faded sun spots, and leaves the eye area feeling refreshed eliminating any bags from not enough sleep. It is light weight and has a refreshing scent. I know it is an eye cream but I also use it on the tops of my hands. I noticed in just two weeks the tops of my hands are softer, and my freckles on my hands have faded significantly. This product is perfect for those wanting to prevent and correct damaged aging skin without any harsh chemicals.

Patchouli Oil: Since the tops of the hands and neck area are the first signs of aging, I am always trying to keep those areas out of the sun and moisturized. Ever hear the saying “You can tell a woman’s age by her hands”? That has always stuck in my mind. I am in the habit of keeping Patchouli oil in my purse to keep those areas moisturized at all times. Not only is it used to promote healthy skin but you can defuse it for emotional release and it aids in nausea support. I love the earthy scent, it reminds me of my Bali days.

White Angelica Oil:  This oil is a blend of essential oils that calm and soothe, promote feelings of strength and protects agains negative energy. As teachers we are healers. People come to yoga for many different reasons but they all have one thing in common…they are looking for a release, looking for some comfort and looking at you for some guidance. I have had students who suffer from severe depression, anxiety, going through divorces, death, mentally/physically handicap due to major accidents, sickness , etc. I am an emotionally sensitive person….Always have been and always will be.  I touch each and every one of my students. Their energy definitely radiates through me. Sometimes energies can be overbearing and sometimes these energies have nothing to do with my personal feelings. By applying this oil topically it helps to keep my aura in check so that I have nothing but positive vibes to exchange with my students to help them through any tough time they may be going through. I care immensely about my students and will always go out of my way to help one in need. Being a teacher is my calling, its one of the best parts of my life. Love love love you all!

If you have any questions or would like any other information regarding the brand or would like to sign up feel free to shoot me an e-mail 🙂

My remedies on healing a broken heart:

image1.jpg

This is something every person on the planet can relate too. We have all had our hearts broken. Whether it was an ex lover, loss of a person, or health wise such as a heart attack or any other cardiovascular illness we have all had that gut wrenching pain in our hearts where it hurts to breathe. Below are a few tips for those looking to turn their frowns upside down. Because in reality, there is no greater feeling than to be loved and to love in return.

1. Carry a rose quartz crystal everywhere with you! Known as the “love stone” this pink crystal has powerful energy that resonates with the heart chakra. The heart chakra is responsible not only for the love of other people but it is responsible for the love we have for ourselves.  This crystal has a powerful effect on healing your emotional state and aiding in relationship problems by producing peaceful and calming sensations that help dissolve anger and resentment helping us feel compassion and forgiveness. I typically carry my stone in my pocket book and use it during mediation and yoga. You can also wear the crystal around the neck that way the energy of the crystal will resonate out into your whole aura. I personally got my stone from the dessert in Australia but you can get the stone anywhere. I recommend this site as well.  http://www.crystalhealingshop.com

2. Rose oil: Apply topically to the temples during mediation or any heart opener pose. Apply some to the wrist as well to keep you balanced throughout the day. Rose oil boosts self esteem, confidence and mental strength. It also relieves anxiety. Not only will you have a happy heart and mind, its light sweet scent will make you smell good too. Any natural rose oil will do but I am OBSESSED with my Young Living Rose oil and highly recommend it. Not only can you use it for balancing your heart chakra and healing your heart,  but it is perfect for dry or aging skin. If your interested in ordering send me an email: ccolombino43@gmail.com.

3. Meditation: Don’t be afraid to sit with yourself and your thoughts. Choose a mantra that is different every day. “I will forgive XX,” “I will let go of XX” “This no longer serves me” I am open to love”  are just a few affirmations you can chant silently while meditating.

4. Heart healing bath….(wine suggested but optional) A good soak in the tub can always wash away any negativity and help calm the mind. Plus, you’re pampering yourself! Not only does this help with balancing the heart chakra but your skin will feel nice and soft and will release and toxins by the use of the Epsom salt.

1/2 cup of sweet almond oil

10 drops of rose oil

Little bit of Epsom salt.

5. Reading: When one is going through a difficult time, sleep may not come easily. Laying in bed going over painful thoughts in your mind over and over…it can be a nightmare! Reading has helped me personally with sleep and escape from painful realities if I was going through a tough time. Before bed, put all electronics away including social media. Pick up a book and read until your eyelids can’t stay open any longer. I suggest investing in a book light so you can read with the lights off and not have to get out of bed to turn them off.  ( Unless your fancy and have clap on clap off…Always wanted that!! ) Anyhow, Reading is a way to loose yourself in a fairy tale world which sometimes we need to do. It is also a great way to learn. Learning is a huge way to better ourselves. Learning a language, a background, a point of view…anything. It makes you well rounded and cultured. It will also inspire you. Inspire you to be a better person, and give you ideas on future adventures. Reading every night before bed is still part of my routine. It’s something I can’t get enough of and look forward too at the end of my day. One day, I will have a library in my home imitating the one from Beauty and the Beast with the ladder and all. I will have a circle tufted ottoman that I lay on and read books all day everyday. Thats my fairy tale 😉

6. Practicing forgiveness: Forgive the person who has wronged or hurt you. Make peace with it. If you try and “get revenge” the person who will suffer in the long run will be you. Being rejected is one of the worst feelings in the world. This takes time and this takes work to get over. Acting like you are at peace and happy one day and then acting mean and bitter the next day is not proving anything positive. You may be able to fool other people but you will never be able to fool yourself.

7. Remember: “TIME HEALS ALL”. This is something that I have always said and live by. Each day that we face the pain, it will get smaller and smaller as the days pass on. Relax and breathe. You are loved.

Transitioning from student to teacher

Transitioning from student to teacher can be overwhelming. I am always going to be a student. I am one who is eager to learn and am comfortable enough in my own skin to know I am not always right and do not have all the answers. I do love teaching and making a positive impact on others, making them feel good physically and mentally. It is truly the best job in the world.

Teaching the first month for me was intimidating and scary. Then I remembered…I came to yoga to get rid of any anxiety and negative thoughts..so why am I feeling them when I step on my mat? I took a step back from the situation and I realized that you can’t really mess up and if you do “Oh well”, whats the worst thats going to happen? (my life motto) Yoga is peace, and should be fun and lift you up. Each teacher is unique and has their own way of teaching. Embrace that and let them inspire you. You do not need to mold yourself into trying to be like your teachers. Your light shines brightest when you are true to your self. As time goes on you will find yourself in your own groove and you will look back and laugh on why you were intimidated in the first place. I wanted to share with those who are new to teaching  tips that I found useful.  Practice makes perfect in both teaching and in your own practice.

Tuesdays Tip: Oils

I always like to focus on adjustments in my classes. Personally when I take a class, when I am touched it relaxes me. I make sure to focus on the lower back and shoulders in the beginning of class and brow bone at the end of class during savasana.  Oil can be tricky, everyone has a different scent preferences and skin sensitivities. Here are a few things to  keep in mind when trying to pick an oil to use:

  • Light in scent
  • Something that is natural, some people have super sensitive skin
  • Something that absorbs into the skin so you do not leave any oily residue behind

Weleda Oil is my go too. I personally love the Rose scent, I use it on my students especially while working on the heart chakra. Weleda stands by their meaning “ When we say all natural we mean all natural”. – Weleda

  • No synthetic preservatives
  • No synthetic fragrances
  • No synthetic chemicals
  • No synthetic anything
  • No animal testing

The oil comes in a nice size which will last a while. You can purchase them at any Whole Foods or on their website: http://usa.weleda.com/natural-products/natural-body-oil.aspx
